IT integration
Shared IT platform tailored to integrated process.
As a leading global manufacturer of hydraulic lifting systems, PALFINGER must continually innovate across its extensive product range. This includes:
- Loader cranes
- Forestry and recycling cranes
- Container handling systems
- Offshore wind energy cranes
Delivering total supply-chain management
Against a commercial backdrop of intensified competition and rising costs, a simple materials supplier would not suffice. Instead, PALFINGER needed a comprehensive outsourced procurement service that could take on responsibility for all aspects of supply-chain management, including:
- Logistics
- Product development
- Associated data processing
- Supply of high quality steel
Finding the ideal product solution
At the core of PALFINGER’s international operations is the exceptionally reliable, stable and durable Ympress® steel used in modern cranes and lifting systems.
- The Ympress steel product range has been consistently relied upon by PALFINGER for 10 years
- Ympress steel is globally recognised for its high strength and outstanding formability
PALFINGER’s operations use approximately 8,000 tonnes of Ympress high strength steel every year.
Having worked closely with PALFINGER for a decade, Tata Steel was ideally placed to develop and deliver a broad range of outsourced services, in addition to its Ympress® product portfolio.
Shared IT system creates greater efficiencies
Among a number of new outsourcing initiatives is the installation of a shared IT system designed to deliver a thoroughly integrated process. This platform was tailored by Tata Steel for PALFINGER and is used for:
- Managing the entire ordering process
- Sharing important data
- Planning forecasts
Tata Steel’s specially trained personnel regularly check the latest information on material requirements and stock from the database. At the same time, they input information on documentation or logistics, which can be accessed by the PALFINGER team.
Central contact point ensures productive operations
Tata Steel's Service Centre Maastricht BV (Feijen) is the central contact point for the customer. Our service centre communicates directly with:
- Lifting and excavating sector experts in production facilities
- Research and development units
To ensure fast delivery, steel produced at Tata Steel’s plant in the Netherlands is held in a central storage facility. Feijen organises the decoiling of the Ympress® coils as well as delivery of sheets in the required dimensions to PALFINGER production units in:
- Austria
- Slovenia
- Bulgaria
- Brazil
Thanks to efficient logistics, the site in Austria, for instance, can be restocked in just 48 hours.
Supplying steel of the highest surface quality
PALFINGER’s new loading crane has set particularly high standards for the surface finish of the steel. An extremely smooth surface is required for subsequent processing steps, such as painting and coating. Tata Steel is working on solutions, ensuring a delivery of the desired surface roughness of less than 30μ, without the need for further post-treatment by the customer.
