Protact® is polymer coated technology and differs from a traditionally lacquered can in two key ways: it uses no lacquers, and has a chromium VI-free substrate which is compliant with forthcoming REACH legislation.
The use of chromium VI associated with tin-free steel production will not meet the new REACH standards which will be introduced in Europe in the next years. The replacement Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT®) used in Protact overcomes this issue.
VOC emissions associated with the lacquering process – which are subject to increasing regulatory controls – are also eliminated with the new simplified canmaking process. In addition, Tata Steel’s polymer coating processes avoid the use of natural gas, unlike traditional canmaking lines, further reducing CO2 emissions in the supply chain.

The polymer films used to coat the packaging steel can be tailored for different applications and come in clear, white, gold and other colours, providing brand owners with a choice of premium quality finishes to suit their product. Made from food-safe materials such as PET and PP, the coating meets strict regulations for food contact. The films offer sealability and heat resistance for sterilisation, while their printability enables high-quality on-pack promotion.
