Located close to Bristol, the multi award winning Hanham Hall project is one of the most important developments of spacious, sustainable energy efficient new homes in the UK. Set in 12 acres, the schemes 185 homes consist of one, two, three, four and five bedroom dwellings which have been designed so that they are all much better in energy performance than required by the current UK building regulations standard.

The challenge

The Hanham Hall development required a scheme design that would meet the stringent requirements of Code Level 6 while also being acceptable to all stakeholders. To achieve this balance Barratt Homes worked closely from the very start of the design process with a larger number of interested parties including design team partners, the Parish Council, the Homes and Communities Agency, English Heritage, South Gloucestershire Council, the Green Belt Society, local residents, and the supply chain.

The project required a roofing system that would fit in with the SIPs panels and achieve the desired high quality details. The Colorcoat Urban® system is extremely versatile and the standing seam roofing system and bespoke gutters were specially designed to fit the project's SIPs panels.

The solution

It was the architectural style and technical ability of Colorcoat Urban® standing seam steel roof system that impressed the client and provided them with the best fit waterproof solution for the project.

Traditional roofing systems simply weren’t able to achieve the design requirements of fitting in with a SIPs panel construction while still achieving the highest quality detailing. The roofs of the homes were also designed to be mostly at an angle of 12.5 degrees and the Colorcoat Urban® roof system from Tata Steel was not only the most ideal and cost-effective roofing system available, but it can quite easily achieve roof pitches down to 5 degrees.

In addition, a decision taken late in the design stage, to include photovoltaic power generation technology, instead of a combined heat and power generator, meant that a roofing system that could easily accommodate photovoltaic panels was required. Once again, the versatility of Colorcoat Urban® means it is capable of easily accommodating photovoltaic panels and other renewable technologies and roof furniture using its Urban Seam® clamp.
