Prime Lubrication Treatment facilitates the manufacturing of stamped components by minimising known issues in stamping and joining
Prime Lubrication Treatment (PLT) is a mill-applied surface treatment that reduces tool pollution and galling during stamping and improves the quality of the adhesive bonds, while leaving other processes like spot welding and cleaning unaffected.
PLT enables an easy switch from electro-galvanised steel to cost-effective hot-dip galvanised steel, especially for the outer panels.
We support users of PLT with a suite of dedicated (tribology) services such as the TCO Scan, which quantifies the benefits of advanced surface treatments in your press shop and subsequent processes.
PLT for a smooth transition to hot-dip galvanised steel
Our Prime Lubrication Treatment (PLT) makes it easy to switch from electro-galvanised steel to cost-effective, hot-dip galvanised steel. Applied in our galvanising line and working with a conventional oil layer, we developed this thin booster lubricant to ensure the smooth processing of high quality exposed automotive panels. PLT also acts as a bonding promoter for zinc-magnesium coatings.
The result is improved manufacturing efficiency, with increased output due to reduced tool wear and pollution, and a low and stable friction coefficient during stamping. Its unique formulation ensures that PLT has no negative impact on other panel production processes such as spot welding and adhesive GI bonding. It even solves bonding issues on zinc-magnesium coatings. PLT is a sustainable organic substance and is completely removed in the cleaning bath.
Mill applied advanced lubricants
PLT is available on products from 0.6 mm – 1.0 mm thick and from 900 mm – 1830 mm wide, with plans in place to extend the width to 2020 mm.
Our material experts are there to support the deployment of our products in your specific application area. For more information contact our PLT experts.
PLT shows much better friction behaviour

Are you interested in reducing your total cost of ownership?
Tata Steel has developed a process to review and quantify how its steel grades perform against the objectives of weight, cost and performance - the TCO (total cost of ownership) Scan. Using this method, Tata Steel engineers can help quantify benefits that advanced lubricants, like second generation pre-lubes such as PLS100T or our PLT booster lube, can bring to your press shop.
