Tata Steel and the UK Government jointly agree on a proposal for the largest investment in the UK steel industry for decades. The proposal lays the decarbonisation pathway towards globally competitive and sustainable steel making.
To reach carbon-neutrality by 2045 we have to fundamentally transform our iron and steel production processes which will take a number of years to complete. In the meantime we are not sitting idle. Instead, we are working on a large number of projects to make reductions in CO2 emissions as part of our push towards carbon neutral steel production. Each of these will help us to further reduce our carbon emissions.
The challenge of meeting society’s demands for net-zero carbon steel making is huge. But our company has a long history of meeting such challenges in a responsible way and we believe passionately in steel’s vital role in society’s low-carbon future.
To be a net-zero steelmaker by 2045
The question is not whether hydrogen will have a part to play in UK steelmaking, but when.
While various steelmaking technologies are being considered, Tata Steel UK is a founding member of the South Wales Industrial Cluster which is developing plans for shared infrastructure and a similar hydrogen economy.
It is also why we have introduced Optemis Carbon Lite - a certified low CO2 steel offering to customers.
