Under the spotlight:
Joseph Woolley, Key Account Manager
Find out how I began my career at Building Systems UK and what my current role entails.
You may want to read about my interests away from work and my passion for football, or my WhatsApp GIFs!
My current role is Contractor Sales, with responsibility for the Midlands and South West regions. I’m the initial point of contact that looks after a set of key customers, providing support for all of their enquires.
Part of my job entails keeping the customer informed of any new products or services and working with them to increase sales volumes.
I left college and attended Manchester Metropolitan University where I achieved a First-Class Hons degree in Marketing Management.
While working towards the end of my degree, I started to think about employment and began researching career options. My searching brought me to the Tata Steel commercial graduate programme, focussing on sales and marketing. This appealed to me as at the time I wasn’t sure which avenue my career path was heading.
I applied to enrol on the programme and after attending a successful interview began my career with Tata Steel. This was in 2018 and I have been here ever since.
At the beginning of my career at Building Systems UK, I worked on numerous projects and was tasked with looking at one of our key business strategies - customer focus.
We looked at the whole customer engagement process and ran various workshops with multi-departments in attendance, resulting in us being able to implement a lot of improvements throughout the business which improved our customer’s journey.
At Building Systems UK there is a lot of work being carried out on product development to keep up with the market requirements and this is something I find exciting that the business is really targeting this area and working to continually develop new products.
I think people would be surprised to really understand the actual scale of the steel industry, it’s something that still surprises me, the scale in the UK alone is huge.
Just within Building Systems UK, there are many different sectors and industries we serve and it's nice to see where our steel ends up!
I think the events of recent times have really highlighted the importance of fire safety in buildings and there is a huge drive towards specifying and producing products aimed at making buildings safer.
Another area of major focus is the environment and sustainability. Within all industries there is a big drive to cut down carbon output and Tata Steel has launched several initiatives designed to help achieve its goals of reducing our carbon emissions.
I play football at semi-professional level and dedicate a lot of my time to this training, travelling and trying to win games!
I’m a keen sportsman and ‘enjoy’ spending time at the gym
I think if I could do the job I dreamed of as a child, it would of course be a professional footballer, certainly something sport related, perhaps a PE teacher or a football coach – that would be interesting, engaging and rewarding.
As crazy as it sounds, there are two GIFs of me playing football that can be used in the WhatsApp messenger.
If you search my name in the GIF section, you’ll see me at the peak of my football career (he jokes). I bet not many people can say that… unless they are famous of course.
