For customers which do want to onward sell the information below can be used as a guide:
Customer which has its own CO2 bank:
- Customer can put reductions in its own CO2 bank based on its starting point (how it currently evaluates its Scope 3 emissions)
- The customer's CO2 bank should have third party oversight and assurance
- Banked reductions can be sold by the customer under its own brand.
Customer which doesn't have a CO2 bank:
- CO2 intensity values can be used to quantify the carbon emissions of the product the customer sells
- The impacts associated with processing the steel (e.g. fabrication) should be accounted for along with any associated yield losses
- It should be made clear that the final carbon intensity of the customer's product is calculated using a mass balance approach.
